Have you encountered hurdles related to your Amazon Fire Stick freezing? The Amazon Fire Stick can sometimes freeze because it doesn’t have enough memory or because there are bugs in the software. Luckily, the article elaborates on step-by-step ways of identifying a frozen Firestick.

You need to restart your Fire TV Stick when fixing connectivity, playback, or performance problems. There are various ways of restarting a frozen Firestick, such as using a remote to reboot (warm boot) or unplugging the power adapter for a couple of seconds and then plugging it back in (cold boot). Follow the guide below as we provide more tips on unfreezing an unresponsive Firestick or remote.

Let’s dive in!

Key Takeaways

  • Lagging, Buffering, freezing, and unresponsive issues occur on Firesticks due to slow connections, software issues, and low memory.
  • Force a restart on the frozen Firestick by pressing and holding the Select and Play/ Pause buttons on a remote at the same time. Tap Settings, Device, and finally, select Restart from the Fire TV menu.
  • Restart a laggy Amazon Firestick via a hard reboot. Unplug the power cord for three seconds and then plug it back.
  • Reset the Firestick to factory settings to fix hardware damage and technical issues.

What Causes Firestick to Freeze Up?

Like other media devices, the Firestick can become unresponsive for various reasons. A common reason for freezing is the overaccumulation of cache data. More cache can lead to lagging and other performance issues.

FireStick apps can sometimes freeze, making you unable to access the home window. If your Firestick only freezes when you use a certain app, you should uninstall or delete its temporary files and rerun them. You might have also installed an update or app that needs the Firestick to be turned off and on again for it to work.

Clear Data Troubleshooting

To resolve freezing issues, restart your Wi-Fi router and reconnect your Firestick.

How to Restart Frozen Firestick with Remote

Restarting your FireStick helps, especially when experiencing performance problems. Sometimes, the only way to make sure the FireStick works is to restart your streaming media device. Using a remote to unfreeze a fire stick is a shortcut to rebooting your system faster.

Restarting a frozen Firestick facilitates refreshing the device’s operating system to allow smooth functionality. Using a remote to reboot a frozen Firestick is known as a “soft restart” or “warm boot.” Here we will illustrate how to restart your Amazon Fire TV Stick:

  • Press Select and hold the Play/ Pause buttons together for 3-5 seconds. Release the buttons once a powering-off message appears on the TV screen.
Remote Control Play Pause Button
  • Navigate the Reset option using the arrow keys. Let the device reboot and check if the problem persists.

The above key combination works on most Firestick remotes. But if your Fire TV doesn’t turn back on when you press the key combination, you can try restarting the system from the Settings menu. The below step-by-step method is easy to access and applies to all Fire TV models (1st generation up to 4K Max):

  1. Press the Home button on your Fire TV Stick Remote and press the Settings menu from the far right
TV Menu Settings
  1. Tap My Fire TV (some models have the title Device & Software)
My Fire TV on Menu
  1. Scroll down and select Restart on the My Fire TV Menu
My Fire TV Menu Restart
  1. On the confirmation pop-up menu, tap Restart again
My Fire TV Menu Confirm Restart
  1. The Fire TV will shut down upon indicating the message ‘Your Amazon Fire Stick Is Powering Off
  2. Let the Fire TV Stick power on automatically in about 5-10 seconds

Firestick Frozen Remote Not Working

You might consider a hard reboot if your Fire Stick remote isn’t responsive. Power cycle your streaming device by reconnecting it to its power source. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet or remove the USB power adapter from the Fire TV. Wait about 3–10 seconds before plugging the adapters back into the power source.

Fire Stick Frozen on Startup

You can resolve performance issues during startup through numerous solutions, including:

  • Confirm whether your TV is HDCP-compliant on the TV manual
  • Leave the media device on for 25 minutes or until the screen changes
  • Restarting your Fire TV media device
  • Plug the Fire TV device using the power cord in the package to ensure the Fire TV has access to enough power
  • Ensure you are using a high-speed HDMI cable, and try using different HDMI ports
  • Force stop and clear any temporary app files (cache)
  • Update the app

If the boot issue persists, consider resetting the Fire TV device to factory settings or seek more fixes from the Amazon support team.

Fire Stick Stuck in Boot Loop

Your Firestick can get stuck in a boot loop if the power supply isn’t enough. Low power supplies and hardware issues can cause your Firestick to restart or turn on. Only the power cables, adapters, and HDMI cables that came with the Fire TV Stick or those made by Amazon can fix problems with the power supply.

Plug your Firestick’s power cable into a wall outlet rather than the TV’s USB port. Also, remove cable extensions and HDMI devices from your TV to help the Firestick boot properly. Here is a video to help fix the issue.

Firestick Frozen Black Screen

If your Fire TV stick has a black screen, you probably used the wrong HDMI output port. Televisions have multiple HDMI ports. Hence, resolve the issue by cycling through the inputs using your TV remote and determining if the problem persists.

Amazon Fire Stick Frozen on Logo

Amazon Fire Stick is a popular media streaming device that allows users to shop and stream movies and TV shows on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. However, the device could experience performance issues that require troubleshooting or fixing. Consider restarting your media device or checking its connections to resolve the startup problem. Alternatively, reset your Fire TV device to factory settings, especially if the issue persists.

Firestick Freezes After 5 Seconds

Constant freezing can be a result of a slow internet connection. Thus, consider checking your internet speeds to prevent videos from buffering now and then. Alternatively, you can soft restart directly via a remote controller as follows:

  • Press and hold down the Select and Play/ Pause buttons on the remote for 5 seconds
Remote Control Select and Play Button
  • Release the buttons once the confirmation message pops up on the screen. Then wait for your FireStick to restart

Firestick Frozen on Home Screen

The frozen screen on your Fire TV prevents you from navigating anything. But you can force a restart by unplugging the Fire TV Stick. Forcing a hard restart is reliable for a frozen home screen and an unresponsive Firestick remote controller. Unplug the Firestick from its power source and wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back into the power supply.

How Do You Reset an Unresponsive Fire Stick?

If rebooting your Firestick does not resolve the unresponsiveness issue, reset it. Hardware damage and factory defects can lead to unresponsiveness, but the problem can be resolved by resetting to factory defaults.

Performing a reset on a laggy and frozen firestick is imperative as it clears memory, deletes all downloaded content, and solves technical hurdles experienced by the device. To reset your Firestick, follow the steps below:

  • Open Settings and click My Fire TV
My Fire TV on Menu
  • Select Reset to Factory default on the pop-up menu
My Fire TV Menu Reset Factory Default
  • Click Reset and wait
My Fire TV Menu Reset Button

Alternatively, you can factory reset your Firestick using a remote. Before performing a factory reset, remember that resetting erases all your Firestick details. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Press and hold the Back button and Right navigation key together for 10-15 seconds
Remote Control Black Button
  • Then, click the OK command prompt that displays on your TV
  • Wait until it automatically turns on

Roku and Firestick are popular streaming devices that allow you to watch content from various sources like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Disney+, and more on your TV.

Roku vs Firestick Key differences:

  1. Platform: Firestick runs on Amazon’s Fire TV operating system, while Roku has its own operating system.
  2. Voice control: Firestick has Alexa voice control built-in, while Roku has its own voice control feature.
  3. Available channels: Both offer a wide range of channels, but some channels may only be available on one platform or the other.
  4. User interface: The user interface on Firestick is more visually appealing, while Roku’s is simpler and more straightforward.
  5. Price: Firestick is generally cheaper than Roku for paid content.
  6. Remote control: The remote control for Firestick has more features, such as the ability to control your TV’s volume and power, while the Roku remote is more basic.

Ultimately, the choice between the two will depend on your personal preferences and needs. Both are good options for streaming content to your TV.

Roku is a better choice for people who need more convenience. Also, it has a lot of free content you can watch without a subscription. On the other hand, Firestick has loads of exclusive content and works well with all Amazon devices, including Echo Dot and Fire TV.

I’ve been using Roku and Firestick for some time, and I have compared both streaming devices to help you make the right decision in this article.

Amazon Firestick: An Overview

Amazon introduced its Fire TV Stick in 2014; since then, it has been a favorite among online streaming lovers. The reason for Firestick’s immense popularity is the content and features it offers.

Just plug it into your TV or monitor, and you can stream your favorite content. To date, Amazon has released several Firestick versions, some of which even support 4K content.

Even the remote controls got smarter, and the built-in Alexa helps control the Fire TV Stick using voice commands.

Roku TV: An Overview

Roku TV has been there for over 20 years, making it a popular streaming platform. Though the set-up box was only released in 2008, it is still older than Firestick. The best model in 2023 is Roku Streaming Stick Plus, which is as convenient as the Firestick.

Setting up Roku TV requires an active internet connection and a Roku Account. I love the Roku remote as it features everything needed for a smooth streaming experience. You can even use voice commands to search for channels and do much more. Roku also features several free channels

Roku Vs. Firestick: A Detailed Comparison

In this section, I’ve compared Roku and Firestick streaming devices. From the prices to ease of use and video quality, you’ll know everything to make an informed decision.

Ease of Use

Regarding ease of use, both Roku TV and Firestick are amazing. However, Roku wins here, as setting it up requires less time, and the interface is pretty simple.

The initial setup process of Roku and Firestick is similar. All you need is to plug in the cord-cutter device in your TV and follow the on-screen instructions. Once done, you need to enter your account credentials, i.e., Roku account details and Amazon account details to complete the process.

Both devices show clear on-screen instructions, and setting them up is a piece of cake. I recommend Roku for people that are not so geeky and need something simple.

Pricing

Roku and Fire TV Stick offer 4K models and many movies and TV shows you can choose from.

Disclaimer: The prices listed here are subject to change and depend on the service provider. Cross-check the price on the official website before making a purchase.

Streaming Quality

Fire TV Stick 4K Max is a clear winner regarding picture quality. I’ve used the 4K Firestick and Roku TV models and have a clear idea of what both cord-cutters offer.

Both streaming devices deliver 4K content, but Firestick offers better color contrast. Also, the audio quality is better with the Firestick plugged into your 4K TV. Roku TV’s audio/video quality was impressive, but Firestick has the edge over Roku.

Better Menu

The menu is the interface of the streaming device. It has a massive impact on the watching experience since everyone needs a menu that’s easy to navigate. Both Fire TV Stick and Roku TV have an extensive menu, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

While navigating through the menus, I found Roku easier to understand. It’s easier to browse through and quickly find the content you want to watch. However, it does not mean that Firestick has a poor menu. It is just broader, and navigating through it takes time.

If simplicity is your preference, Roku TV should be your choice. Also, the latest menu update made Roku’s menu even better.

Remote Control

The Firestick’s Alexa voice remote made many headlines for its features, whereas the Roku remote is a silent player. I’ve had my hands on both remotes and found the Roku remote a better choice.

The Roku Remote has more control buttons and offers quick access to several apps, including Netflix, Apple TV, and more. Also, the remote feels more durable compared to the Fire TV Remote.

In addition, Roku’s remote has two programmable buttons that add more convenience. The remote with a Firestick also has quick-access buttons, but they can’t be programmed.

However, you can easily connect a Firestick remote to a TV, which is a bit complicated with Roku.

Better Search Results

Roku again wins as it offers better search results as compared to Firestick. The search results on Roku TV are straightforward, and you can quickly find what you need. On the other hand, Firestick’s search results are confusing, with plenty of options and false positives.

Finding your favorite shows from thousands of available options can be pretty challenging. Therefore, you should choose Roku TV as it has better search results.

Support

The customer support for both streaming devices is fantastic, and deciding on a clear winner is difficult. I have been using Roku and Fire TV Stick for a long time and have no issue contacting customer support.

Though the wait time for Roku was a bit longer than Firestick, the service was satisfactory. If you prefer top-of-the-line customer support, Firestick seems better because Amazon knows how to look after its customers.

Convenient

Roku TV has a menu you’ll easily navigate, but using a Firestick is more convenient. Also, plenty of Firestick guides educate users about its features. Once you get the hang of its features, you’ll find using a Firestick easier and more convenient.

I’ll rate Firestick 9/10 in terms of convenience, whereas the Roku TV deserves 8/10. However, it is subjective as some people find Roku TV more convenient. I asked some of my friends and other streaming device users, and everyone recommended Firestick because of its convenience.

Additional Features

Apart from streaming 4K content, these cord-cutter streaming devices offer you plenty of features. You can do a lot, from controlling the remote using voice commands to using the device using your smartphone.

Firestick is a better option when it comes to additional features. If you prefer features and want to enjoy using the streaming device, you should go for a Firestick.

Roku TV Stick is popular because it’s easy to use, and has fewer features, so folks with less tech know-how can also use it.

Which is the Best Streaming Device and for Whom?

Now that you know the difference between a Firestick and Roku TV, it’s time to decide. Below is a brief verdict of each streaming device you’ll find helpful when choosing one.

Who Should Choose a Firestick?

Amazon Firestick is for people who prefer ultra-HD video and audio quality. This streaming device offers loads of features, and you can have a fantastic watch time. Also, Firesticks are perfect if you want to access plenty of apps such as Netflix and more.

Also, Amazon offers multiple options, including a Lite version and 4K Max. Lastly, Firestick is cheaper than Roku, making it a good choice.

Who Should Choose Roku Stick?

Roku Stick is perfect for folks who want an easy-to-use streaming device. The handy remote comes with multiple buttons to launch apps on the go. In addition, the Roku remote has two programmable buttons to set shortcuts.

Roku also has better search results, and you don’t have to wait to watch your favorite programs. The interface lets you navigate it quickly, so there’s no need to fuss. Roku has more versions available such as Roku Streambar, a soundbar with a built-in streaming device.

Why Firestick Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi?

There are numerous probable causes for Firestick Wi-Fi connectivity troubles. Some common issues are listed below:

  • Technical issues. This may include incorrect passwords, faulty router or cable, or DNS server problems.
  • Weak signal. This may be the leading cause of Wi-Fi problems. Interference from other wireless devices is one way to make your signal weak. For example, if you have a smartphone, a microwave, or even a baby monitor turned on and placed near your Firestick, it may influence the signal strength that your Firestick receives. Bluetooth technology can also disrupt Wi-Fi transmissions.
  • Physical barriers also diminish signal strength. Walls, doors, glass, and other materials such as concrete and metal can reflect, refract, or absorb the Wi-Fi signal from your Network, preventing it from reaching your Firestick at full intensity.
  • More distance between your Firestick and Wi-Fi router is also a common cause of weak signal quality. Different Internet routers have varying signal ranges. If your Firestick is outside the router’s range, your Wi-Fi connection will have problems.

Losing a Wi-Fi connection can occur for a variety of reasons. Nevertheless, most Firestick connectivity issues are simple to resolve. You can troubleshoot and restore your connection using any of the methods discussed below.

Solution #1: Check if You Have an Active Wi-Fi Connection

Restarting the router will resolve temporary difficulties and improve internet speed. Follow the instructions outlined below.

If resetting your router does not resolve the issue, you should reboot your Firestick. There may be system errors preventing a connection to the internet. Restarting the Firestick ends all programs and services and restarts them. This will resolve some minor issues. There are three methods for restarting a Firestick.

The first method is through the Firestick settings:

  • Then, wait for your Firestick to restart.

The final approach is to unplug your Firestick from your TV or power socket and wait for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

Solution #4: Forget Your Network and Reconnect

When your Fire TV stick cannot connect to your Wi-Fi network, you can remove and re-add your connection to the list of saved networks. That assists your device in reestablishing a connection to your router.

Note that you will need your Wi-Fi password to reconnect.

  • Launch the Settings menu of your Firestick.
    • Scroll to your Network, then press the Menu button on your remote.
    • To forget the Network, press the Select button on your remote control.

    Connect to a Hidden Network

If your Wi-Fi network configuration is hidden, it will not appear in the list of available networks. You have two alternatives in this situation:

    • Unhide the Wi-Fi network
    • Join the network

You will need to follow a special protocol to connect your Firestick to a secret Wi-Fi network. That is because your Network is not on the standard list.

Make sure you have the password for your Wi-Fi network. Here’s how to do it:

Solution #5: Remove Obstacles and Interference

Earlier, we mentioned that physical obstructions could weaken your Wi-Fi signal strength. Signal interruption depends on the materials between your router and your Firestick. Concrete, metal, and glass generate some of the highest interference levels.

If there are clear obstructions to your Wi-Fi signal, try relocating your router so that the path between it and your Firestick is shorter and free of obstacles. A minor router relocation can resolve your issue.

If your router has adjustable antennae, you can experiment with directing the antennas in different directions while leaving the router in place.

Sometimes, even with no obstructions to your signal, your Wi-Fi network could still be affected by frequency interference from devices such as microwaves, cordless phones, poorly wired satellite dishes, and certain wireless devices. Additionally, competing Wi-Fi networks might cause interference.

If none of the previous solutions have worked, it may be worthwhile to check for wireless interference. To do so, temporarily turn off and unplug each device near or between your router and Firestick (one device at a time). That will help you determine whether they are interfering with your Wi-Fi connection.

If you discover that a gadget is interfering with your Firestick’s connection, consider moving it away from your router and Firestick to see if you can improve the signal.

    • Select About.

    • Select Install Update to start the installation process.
    • Now connect your Firestick to your Wi-Fi network.
