Are Apple Watches Waterproof? It Depends on The Model

Published: Last Updated on
Are Apple Watches Waterproof

Apple Watches are water-resistant, but they are not completely waterproof. The level of water resistance varies depending on the model of the watch. The Apple Watch Series 1, 2, and 3 are water-resistant, meaning they can withstand splashes of water, but they are not suitable for swimming or submerging in water.

The Apple Watch Series 4 and later models have improved water resistance and are suitable for swimming in pools and open water. They can withstand water pressure up to 50 meters deep. However, it’s important to note that while the watch is designed to resist water, it is not completely waterproof and should not be used for activities like scuba diving or high-speed water sports.

It’s also essential to note that water resistance can deteriorate over time due to wear and tear or damage to the watch, so it’s important to check the water resistance rating of your Apple Watch before exposing it to water. Additionally, it’s recommended to avoid exposing the watch to soaps, shampoos, and other chemicals, as these can damage the watch’s water resistance.

Different Apple Watch Series And Their Water Resistance Levels

Here is detailed information on different Apple watch series and their water-resistance levels

Apple Watch Series 1

First-generation Apple watches, or Apple watches 1, have a water-resistance rating of IPX7. These Apple watches should not be submerged in water.

They can only handle occasional water splashes while washing hands, walking in the rain, and sweating during exercise.

It’s best not to wear the first generation watches while swimming or showering. Apple does not recommend it because the microphone and the speaker may get damaged if you submerge them thoroughly in water.

Apple Watch Series 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6

Apple Watch 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 have water-resistance ratings of up to 50 meters. These watches won’t get damaged when completely submerged in water up to the allowed limit.

If it goes beyond that, its parts may get damaged. Please note that even though Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 have the same rating, they are not as water-resistant as the newer models.

Hence, it would be best if you don’t wear the Apple Watch 2 & 3 while swimming for longer hours. But you’re free to wear it while taking a shower, washing hands, working out, etc. Only continuous submersion may create an issue with the device.

Apple Watch Series  4, 5 & 6 are safe to wear during water activities like swimming, rafting, snorkeling, etc. These watches are built to ensure prolonged water submersion up to 50 meters.

But all models’ water-resistance levels subsequently drop, considering daily wear and water exposure.

Apple Watch Series 7

The new Apple Watch Series 7 has a more robust build quality. Its water-resistance level is up to 50 meters, but it’s made for those who want to go for intensive swimming and other water activities.

But it’s still recommended to avoid water being forced into the watch to avoid significant damage.

Remember to rinse the watch with fresh water to remove the salt after swimming in the ocean. You should use Apple’s water ejection feature to eliminate excess water.

Apple Watch Series 8

Apple Watch Series 8, along with the Ultra and SE, is one of the newest releases. Series 8 has a water-resistant level of 50 meters with IP6X certification.

Series 8 can withstand exposure to water and won’t get damaged easily. So can you wear the Apple watch 8 while swimming and showering?  Yes, you can wear it while swimming or showering and during other water activities too.

Apple Watch SE Series

As stated, Apple watches SE is another latest releases of 2023. It’s an affordable alternative to watch 8 but has all the premium features you would want in a smartwatch.

But our main concern is the water-resistant level of the Apple watch SE. Like the Apple Watch 8, the SE also has a water-resistant level of 50 meters.

You don’t have to take off the watch before diving into the pool or enjoying yourself in the bathtub. The watch is also safe to wear while scuba diving, rafting, etc.

Apple Watch Ultra Series

Next up is the Apple watch Ultra series. It’s more potent than the previous releases. The newer the series, the better its features. The Ultra series has water-resistance ratings of 100 meters under the ISO standard 22810:2010.

The series is designed to last in extreme environments. You can easily swim, shower, snorkel, and water ski wearing the Apple watch Ultra.

An Important Note:

Please note Apple does not recommend exposing any watch to potentially harmful liquids like soapy water, insect repellant, sunscreen, oil, perfume, hair dye, detergent, etc. Also, except for the Apple watch Ultra, none of the models is suitable for high-velocity water activities like skiing.
