Key Takeaways

 • There are a number of possible causes of the pulsing in a Dyson vacuum – a malfunctioning power cord, battery or charger, clogged filter, damaged motor, or obstructed hose or wand.
 • It’s important to troubleshoot all the possible causes of pulsing in your Dyson vacuum cleaner.
 • Damaged parts of your Dyson may require replacement with new ones.

Suppose you’ve noticed your Dyson vacuum cleaner pulsing or surging while in use – you’re not alone! This issue can be frustrating and may cause you to question the effectiveness of your vacuum cleaner. Here, we will explore the possible causes of this issue in Dyson vacuum cleaners and provide tips on how to fix it.

Why Is My Dyson Pulsing & How to Fix It

Follow these troubleshooting tips:

 • Check Your Power Cord

A malfunctioning power cord could cause your Dyson vacuum to start pulsing. That can happen if the cord is damaged or frayed, which could cause an intermittent power supply to the vacuum. Therefore, it may need to consistently deliver enough electricity to the vacuum motor, resulting in pulsing behavior.

 • Clogged Filter

If the filter in your Dyson vacuum cleaner becomes clogged, it can cause the vacuum to start pulsing or lose suction. The clogged filter prevents the vacuum’s airflow from functioning properly. The vacuum’s motor may struggle to draw in enough air to maintain normal operation, which can cause pulsing or loss of suction.

Solution: You will need to clean or replace the filter to fix this issue.

To clean the filter, remove the filter from the vacuum and either wash it with water and mild detergent or tap it gently to remove any debris. Let the filter dry completely before putting it back in the vacuum.

If the filter is damaged or soiled, you may need to replace it with a new one. You replace it by locating the filter compartment and removing the old filter. Then, insert a new filter into the compartment and close it securely. Purchase replacement filters from a vacuum cleaner parts retailer.

 • Obstructions In The Hose Or Wand

If an obstruction is present in the hose or wand of a Dyson vacuum, it can cause the vacuum to start pulsing. Obstruction blocks the flow of air through the hose and wand, which can cause a pressure build-up. As a result, the vacuum may start pulsing as it tries to clear the obstruction and restore normal airflow.

Solution: To fix this problem, you must locate and remove the obstruction. Check the hose and wand for visible blockages, such as debris, pet hair, or other foreign objects. If you find a blockage, try using a hose brush or similar tool to clear away any obstruction that may be stuck inside the hose.

 • Debris Stuck In The Brushroll Roller

Debris can cause the roller to stop rotating properly. This hindrance can cause the vacuum to pulse or lose suction, as the roller won’t agitate the carpet.

Solution: To fix this issue, you’ll need to remove the debris that is stuck in the brush roll by following these steps:

 • Turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the outlet.
 • Locate the roller and remove any debris that may be visible. That may require using a pair of tweezers or a small tool to pull out the debris.
 • If the debris is not visible, you may need to remove the brush roll to access it.
 • Once you have removed the debris, reassemble the brush roll and test the vacuum to ensure it is functioning properly.

 • Incorrect Suction Settings

Suction settings set too high can cause your vacuum to pulse or lose suction. That is because the motor works too hard to generate enough suction. Therefore, the airflow through the vacuum becomes disrupted. It can also damage the motor or other parts of the vacuum. On the other hand, if the suction settings are too low, the vacuum may not effectively pick up dirt and debris from the floor.

Solution: To fix this, it’s essential to ensure that the suction settings on your Dyson vacuum are set appropriately for the task at hand. You can adjust it using the suction control lever or button on the vacuum’s handle.

 • Check Your Battery Or Charger

A battery or charger malfunctioning can cause your Dyson vacuum to pulse or turn off unexpectedly. That happens if the battery does not give the device the necessary power. Various issues, such as a damaged or faulty battery and charger or problems with the electrical connections between the battery and the charger, can also cause it.

Solution: If the Dyson vacuum is pulsing, it is essential to stop using it and unplug it from the charger. You also need to check the battery and charger for any visible signs of damage or wear. These include cracks, bulges, or bent or broken connectors. If you suspect that the battery or charger is the cause of the problem, you may need to replace it to resolve the issue.

 • Malfunctioning Motor

The motor is responsible for powering the suction and brush roll, so if it is not functioning correctly, it can cause the vacuum to pulse or surge as it tries to operate. That can be caused by various issues, such as a damaged or worn-out motor, a malfunctioning motor control board, or a blockage in the motor or the vacuum’s airflow path.

Solution: To fix the pulsing issue, you will need to diagnose and address the underlying cause of the malfunctioning motor. It may involve cleaning or replacing the motor and repairing or replacing the motor control board. You can also remove any
blockages in the vacuum’s airflow path.

Why Is My Dyson Pulsing (FAQs)

 • Why is my Dyson v7,v8, v10, v11 pulsing on and off?

There could be several reasons why your Dyson is surging on and off. It could be a problem with the motor, the filters, or the electrical system. To determine the cause of the issue, it will be necessary to troubleshoot the problem using the tips we have given above.

 • How Do I Stop My Dyson From Pulsing?

Ensure the filter is clean and properly installed to stop your Dyson from pulsing. Additionally, try removing any blockages in the airway and check for any kinks in the hose. You also need to check the motor and suction setting to ensure the optimal functioning of the machine. Follow the troubleshooting tips listed above.

 • Dyson Pulsing No Blockage

There could be a few reasons your Dyson vacuum cleaner is pulsing with no blockage. Here are a few possible explanations:

 • The filter may be clogged or dirty. Check to see if the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced.
 • The brush roll may be stuck or damaged. Check if the brush roll is rotating freely and if there are any visible signs of damage.
 • There may be a problem with the motor or the battery. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, the problem may be with the motor/battery. Ensure the motor is working and replace it if not.

 • Dyson Pulsing After Cleaning Filter

If your Dyson vacuum is pulsing even after cleaning the filter, it may be because the filter is not set correctly or is clogged with debris. To fix this issue, try reseating the filter and cleaning it thoroughly to remove any blockages. Also, try troubleshooting for other potential causes, as discussed above.

 • Why Is My Dyson Pulsing On Max?

Your Dyson vacuum cleaner may be pulsing on max because of the high suction setting. You can lower the suction or check for blockages to troubleshoot the issue. Also, ensure that the brush bar is not stuck or damaged. Ultimately, the machine could detect a low battery and is trying to conserve power by pulsing.

Summary: How To Clean Your Garbage Disposal?

Garbage disposal is a great way to keep your kitchen clean and tidy. But, if it isn’t properly cleaned, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Here are some tips on how to clean garbage disposals:

 • Run cold water through the disposal for 30 seconds before adding food scraps. It will help to break down the food and reduce odors.
 • Use a stiff brush or scrubber to clean the blades of the disposal. Be sure to reach all of the nooks and crannies, as this is where bacteria can build up.
 • Pour a cup of baking soda into the disposal and let it sit for 15 minutes. This will help to deodorize and disinfect the disposal.
 • Finally, run hot water through the disposal for 30 seconds to flush away any residual baking soda.

Are You Supposed To Clean a Garbage Disposal? What if You Don’t?

Yes, you’re supposed to clean your garbage disposal. You might think that the compartment inside the garbage disposal stays clean. But it doesn’t. Every time you dispose of your food waste in the sink, your garbage disposal shreds the trash into small particles (less than 2mm in diameter), so they quickly pass through the drainage.

These tiny particles often clog the grinding compartment or the splash protection. And they can decay in the garbage disposal if not disposed of quickly.

Over time, a smelly slime will build up in those spots as they won’t get cleaned by the garbage disposal. Thus, cleaning it is critical to keep it free from foul smells.

How Often Should Garbage Disposal Be Cleaned?

It is essential to clean your garbage disposal regularly to prevent foul odors and ensure it runs smoothly. Depending on how often you use it, you should clean your garbage disposal every one to two weeks. You can clean it more frequently if necessary.

Easy Ways To Clean Your Garbage Disposal System

Many readymade garbage disposal cleaning mixes and other products are available on the market—for example, powder cleaners, liquid cleaners, cleaning kits, etc. However, avoid using chemical-based cleaners if you’re looking for a safe and effective way to clean your garbage disposal.

These products can be corrosive and damage the disposal’s components. Instead, opt for a natural cleaning solution like vinegar, lemon, or baking soda. These household staples are great at cutting through grime and food buildup. Just be sure to flush the disposal with plenty of water afterward to remove any lingering residue.

Why Does My Garbage Disposal Stink?

Your garbage disposal is one of your home’s most frequently used appliances, so it’s no wonder it sometimes starts to smell. If your garbage disposal is starting to stink, you can do a few things to clean it and eliminate the foul odor.

First, try running some hot water down the drain for a few minutes. This will help to loosen any build-up of food or grease that may be causing the smell. If this doesn’t work, I have listed a few ways to resolve the problem below.

How To Clean Garbage Disposal With Lemon?

If your garbage disposal has started to smell bad, it’s time to clean it. Lemons are great for cleaning because they are acidic and help neutralize any odors. Plus, the fresh scent of lemon will leave your kitchen smelling great.

Ingredients You Need:

 • 1/4 cup of baking soda
 • 1/4 cup of lemon juice

Step-By-Step Process:

 • Prepare a thick liquid by mixing the above quantities of lemon juice and baking soda in a container or bucket.
 • Immediately pour the liquid down the garbage disposal, as it will start fizzing.
 • Let the liquid sit in the garbage disposal for about 5-8 minutes. If your unit is too dirty, increase the time.
 • Power on the garbage disposal and run water through it for up to two minutes.

Your garbage disposal will get thoroughly cleaned with this organic DIY process.

However, you may sometimes drop hard vegetable remains in your garbage disposal that may not get completely crushed. That’s how bacterial growth happens, and the system starts stinking.

In this case, you will need to deep clean your disposal unit. Read on as I discuss how to do that.

How To Deep Clean Your Garbage Disposal?

You’d require some additional supplies to be deep clean the disposal unit. These include salt, vinegar, ice, baking soda, and lemon peels.

Note: These ingredients are worth using. The chemical cleaners that most people use to damage the unit’s metal components.

Step-By-Step Deep Cleaning Process

Step 1: Power Off The Garbage Disposal.

The most critical step is to power off the garbage disposal. Not doing this may damage it. Pull the cord connected to a power supply outlet beneath the sink to detach from power or turn off the breaker box.

Note: Make sure to double-check that you have unplugged the correct cord by trying to turn it on before starting to clean it.

Step 2: Clean The Splash Protection.

The splash protection is made of rubber, with many crevices and grooves. And thus, it is likely to trap tiny food particles and oil under it.

Clean it entirely using an old toothbrush and plenty of liquid detergents. Scrub the splash protection vigorously, particularly paying attention to the bottom, to clear all the remains or slime. You can even pull out the compartment of the drain to do so.

Step 3: Remove The Food Remains.

Once the splash protection is removed from the garbage disposal, shine a torch light into it to look for any food remains that might have slipped away from the grinder. Use a pair of tongs to reach the garbage disposal and clear all the food remains.

Safety Tip: Never use bare hands to do this, even if the cutting blades are not in movement. They are sharp enough to cause injury still.

Step 4: Pour In The Solution.

Take half a cup of baking soda and pour it into the garbage disposal. Let the baking soda sit for about 30 minutes. Then, add a cup of vinegar, and a foamy solution will bubble up in the sink.

Allow this solution to sit in your garbage disposal for about five minutes. Then, flush down the solution by rinsing the sink with hot water from the faucet or a jar of boiled water. This chemical reaction will take out all the remains from the garbage disposal.

Step 5: Grind Up Salt And Ice.

To wash the cutting blades of the garbage disposal and release any of the buildups, put back the splash protection, connect the cord to the power, and add in two cups of ice.

Both ice and salt serve as a natural scrub. Add a cup of salt to the ice, pour in cold water, and start on the garbage disposal. Let the garbage disposal run until the ice gets crushed up.

Step 6: Grind Up The Lemon Peels.

The final step of this deep cleaning process is to freshen up the garbage disposal with some fragrance, preferably citrus like lemon peels.

Put some leftover lemon peels or any of the citrus fruit peels into the garbage disposal. Add in some cold water, and turn on the garbage disposal. The result will be a fresh fruity fragrance throughout the entire sink.

What Is The Easiest Way To Clean Out Garbage Disposal?

Spread a cup of baking soda over the garbage disposal. Pour in a cup of vinegar and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, start the garbage disposal and let the hot water flush out all the mixture thoroughly.

Note: Alternatively, use some diced citrus peels.

How Do I Clean And Deodorize My Garbage Disposal?

The garbage disposal tends to accumulate food remains and stains very quickly. So, I recommend you clean it, even if the garbage disposal has not begun to stink. It will eventually!

Cleanse and deodorizing the garbage disposal is simple and won’t take more than a few minutes. And guess what? You don’t need anything beyond what’s already in your kitchen!

Supplies Needed:

 • 1/2 cup of baking soda
 • 1 cup vinegar
 • 1 lemon
 • Ice cubes
 • An old toothbrush
 • Liquid dish wash
 • Sink stopper (optional)

Follow these steps to clean and deodorize your garbage disposal.

Step 1: Loosen Up The Remains And Deodorize.

The first step is loosen up all the remains stuck in the sink and garbage disposal. Doing this will kill most of the smell upfront. Spread some baking soda down the sink, but don’t turn on the water as it will wash it down.

If the baking soda lies on the rubber gasket, use an old brush to push it into the garbage disposal.

Run all the vinegar down the sink and immediately put the sink stopper up the sink. When baking soda and vinegar are mixed together, they will fizz and squirt all over the area. This reaction will loosen up all the remains and remove all the smells.

Leave the mixture in the garbage disposal for 10 minutes, then remove the sink stopper.

Step 2: Clean Out All The Remains.

Wear gloves to avoid the mess getting on your hand. Grab a toothbrush and begin cleaning the rubber gasket and sink. Scrub all the visible components. Lift the rubber gasket, and clean the bottom.

Don’t forget the area surrounding it.

Wash the toothbrush regularly with water to remove all the gunk sitting over it. Add some liquid dishwasher to the brush and rewash the entire area.

Ensure that the soap covers up every area of the drain and garbage disposal. Once done, rinse everything to wash out all the soap.

Step 3: Sharpen The Cutting Blades And Freshen Up Your Garbage Disposal.

Now that you have cleaned everything, all left is to sharpen the cutting blades and freshen up your garbage disposal. Slice a lemon into medium-sized parts and dump them with lots of ice cubes.

Run the garbage disposal for a few minutes and add the lemon pieces to the sink with more ice cubes until they are flushed.

The ice will sharpen the cutting blades, and the lemon will make the garbage disposal smell fresh.

What’s The Worst Thing To Put Down On Garbage Disposal?

Now that you have invested in the best garbage disposal, you need to maintain it and ensure you’re not ruining it. The garbage disposal is not a trash can.

Here are some of the worst items you can put down on your garbage disposal.

 • Fats From Meat

When it comes to your garbage disposal, there are a few things you should never put down the drain. One of those things is meat fat. Meat fat can solidify in your pipes and cause major clogs. It can also be challenging to break down, which means it will just sit in your pipes and cause problems if you have meat fat that you need to dispose of, put it in the trash instead of down your garbage disposal.

 • Coffee Grounds

Though coffee grounds seem harmless, they tend to get stuck to the damp walls of your garbage disposal and drainage pipes. After some time, the coffee grounds attached to the walls will eventually build up to clog your garbage disposal and form blockages in your draining system.

 • Stringy Foods

Stringy foods can quickly get stuck in your garbage disposal, causing it to clog. Additionally, these foods can wrap around your disposal blades, making it difficult for them to do their job correctly. As a result, you may find that your garbage disposal starts to smell or produces strange noises. To avoid these problems, avoid putting stringy foods down your disposal. There are plenty of other ways to dispose of them!

 • Seeds

Like most people, you probably think putting seeds down your garbage disposal is a no-brainer. After all, they’re small and can just be ground up. Wrong.

Seeds can cause some severe problems for your garbage disposal. First, they can get stuck in the blades and cause them to jam. Additionally, the seeds can break down and release their oils into the water over time, eventually leading to clogs.

So, next time you’re tempted to put those leftover pumpkin seeds down the drain, resist the urge! Your garbage disposal will thank you.

FYI: Blunt garbage disposal cutting blades are less useful at breaking down all food waste.

Is It Ok To Pour Bleach Down A Garbage Disposal?

No, it is not ok to pour bleach down a garbage disposal. Bleach can damage the blades of the garbage disposal and over time, the bleach will eat away at the pipes. If you must use bleach to clean your garbage disposal, dilute it with water and only use a small amount.

Is It Ok To Pour Boiling Water Down A Garbage Disposal?

Yes, you can pour hot water down your garbage disposal as it’s absolutely fine. However, I recommend using cold water while grinding up the food waste and hot water while cleaning the garbage disposal.

Cold water will solidify all the grease, making it easier to laminate. Grinding up food scraps using hot water will liquefy the fat, which will only get clogged up in the drain.

When cleaning your garbage disposal with baking soda and vinegar, use hot water to flush all the gunk. Using cold water while grinding all the food waste will extend the life span of the garbage disposal by reducing plumbing and drainage issues.

How Do You Clean Garbage Disposal Without Vinegar?

Here’s the easiest DIY natural garbage disposal cleaning method if you do not have vinegar at home or don’t wish to use it.

Step 1:

Throw some ice into the garbage disposal unit, add some table salt, and power on the garbage disposal until all the ice has disappeared. This will clear all the tiny food waste particles and oil buildup and sharpen the cutting blades.

Note: Rock salt will also help. But it is not required.

Step 2:

Make a mixture using water and baking soda. Now, use a scraper or toothbrush to clean the rubber gasket at the neck of the garbage disposal.

Step 3:

Plug in the garbage disposal, load the sink with cold water and pour some liquid dish soap. Let it sit for some time. Then, turn on the garbage disposal until all the water is emptied.

If there is any odor, spread some baking soda, let it sit for a few minutes, and turn on the garbage disposal again.

Conclusion

It is essential to clean your garbage disposal regularly because it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Following the tips above, you can easily clean and disinfect your disposal.

The post Virtual Walls vs Lighthouses – What are the Differences? (Updated!) appeared first on The WiredShopper.

]]>

What’s the difference between virtual walls vs lighthouses? If you have a robovac (short for robot vacuum), then you may have heard of these two navigation features. But what are they really? Here is an explanation of what these two are and how they compare to each other. If you also don’t have a built-in virtual wall or lighthouse in your robovac, this post will help you decide which one to get if you don’t want to buy both.

What is a Virtual Wall?

what is a virtual wall

A virtual wall is relatively easy to understand simply because the name gives it away. This navigation device creates a virtual wall using infrared light. This light will be detected by your robovac and when they do, they will turn around and go the other way. They won’t even attempt to pass through it - they’re robots after all, so they will simply stick to their programmed rule which is to not pass through the light given off by a virtual wall.

The virtual wall works by having the device set up on the floor. You can place it beside the wall, doorway, or any other ornament that you want your robovac to avoid. When you turn it on, it creates an inverted cone-shaped virtual wall. Since it’s an inverted cone shape, the off-limits area gets wider the farther it is from the device. This ensures that the robovac doesn’t come anywhere near the things you want to protect.

Virtual walls are often used beside things that are fragile, but they can also be used alongside food bowls for your pets. Just place them near the bowl and your robovac won’t trip over it.

Why You Need a Virtual Wall

There are many reasons why you need to get a virtual wall. If you’re not convinced that you need it enough, here are some of the things a virtual wall can do for you.

 • It can confine your robovac to specific areas.

The main purpose of having a virtual wall is that you can keep your robovac in areas that you want to be cleaned while keeping them out of areas that you want to be left alone. Let’s say you want your robovac to stay in the living room and not go to the kitchen; a virtual wall can help you with that. Just set them up in the doorway to the kitchen, and the robovac stays right in the living room.

 • You don’t have to worry about things falling or breaking.

If your house has pots, vases, class structures, then you definitely don’t want your robovac knocking them over. If you have a virtual wall, you don’t have to worry about this. The best thing about this is that it eliminates the additional step of prepping your room to be breakage-free. If you leave the virtual wall there, a simple activation of the devices can allow you to start the cleaning process right away. There’s no need to put the pots up and remove the vases from where they were.

 • It can be used to map out areas that need to be cleaned.

Another great thing about the virtual wall? It helps you plot the areas that you want to be cleaned. What does that mean? Is it like a guide? Technically, it isn’t, because it doesn’t guide your robovac to go to a certain place. Instead, it restricts areas so your robovac has no choice but to go to places that aren’t restricted. For example, if you want the robovac to clean the hallway, then you place the virtual walls on the doorways of your room. That way, it doesn’t go to the rooms and just cleans the hallway area.

What is a Lighthouse?

What is a lighthouse

Just like an actual lighthouse, a lighthouse in robovac language is a navigation device that “guides” your robovac from one area to another. No, it’s not a walking robot that your robovac follows, but it’s a set of lights that turns on and off for your robovac to follow.

How does that work? Picture this - you have several rooms and you want your robovac to go to one room after cleaning the first room. When a lighthouse is set up, it acts as a virtual wall in the entryway to the next room. This means that the robovac can’t cross a room when the first room is not fully cleaned. When it’s already cleaned, the lighthouse “opens” the other room signaling to your robovac to clean it.

In essence, the lighthouse works like a real lighthouse that guides your robovac from room to room. Depending on how you place it around your house, you can direct your robovac to clean the whole floor and even mop it, without having to repeat cleaning the other rooms.

Why You Need a Lighthouse

You might be thinking that a lighthouse is just another way for you to spend on a device. Well, yes, you’re going to spend again if your robovac doesn’t have it, but it’s a very helpful addition. Why? Here are three reasons.

 • It can chart a path for your robovac.

Admit it, nothing can make directing the robovac easier than the lighthouse. With a lighthouse in your home, you can make your robovac more efficient as it goes around your house. A lighthouse also maximizes your robovac’s cleaning capacity by making it go to places on its own without you turning the device on or off after every room that the robovac has cleaned.

 • It manages the area where the robovac cleans.

Another cool thing about the lighthouse is that it acts as a manager to your robovac. Before it opens the wall to another room, it checks if the robovac has cleaned the current room thoroughly. If not, the virtual barrier stays up until the room is cleaned. It’s like your own personal housekeeper.

Which One is Better?

Virtual Walls vs Lighthouses which one better

So you have a Roomba 620 which doesn’t have any navigation control device built into it. What do you get? If you thought that older robovacs are hopeless when it comes to getting a navigation control, you’re in luck now because older versions of the Roomba can still connect with these navigation devices. The only catch here is that you have to buy them separately from the robovac.

What should you get? To help you compare the two, here is a quick rundown on the major difference between the two navigation devices.

 1. The lighthouse directs while the virtual wall blocks.

The main difference between the two is what they really do. The virtual wall prevents your robovac from cleaning a certain area. On the other hand, the lighthouse acts as a virtual wall and a guide - the lighthouse also has the capability to guide your robovac from one place to another.

 1. The lighthouse acts as a virtual wall, too.

If you didn’t know, the lighthouse also acts as a virtual wall. How? Well, when the first room isn’t cleaned yet, the virtual barrier that the device has put up will not be turned off, therefore, limiting the areas the robovac can go. If you haven’t set up commands as to when the virtual wall will come down, then the robovac stays in one place. It’s easily a 2-in-1 device which makes it a better option for people who have to choose between it and the virtual wall.

 1. The lighthouse is less compatible with different models.

Don’t be fooled, though, because even if the lighthouse looks like the better option, it also has its own disadvantages. Compared to the virtual wall, the lighthouse has fewer models that it is compatible with. The virtual wall is compatible with almost every robovac while the lighthouse can only connect with some 500 series models, 780, 790, and 880. If you have a 650, 620, or a 400 series model, then a virtual wall will be the navigation device that you can buy.

 1. The distances the two can block are different.

The virtual wall can block doorways that are 7 feet wide while the lighthouse can block doorways that are 10 feet wide. If you have a small doorway, then buying either of the two will work out well. However, if you have a big doorway, then the lighthouse is something that you would need unless you are willing to buy more virtual walls.

Keep in mind that choosing between a virtual wall and a lighthouse is something you don’t have to do all the time because more modern models of the robovac have a navigation device that comes along with it. If you’re buying a newer model, you might not have to choose between the two at all.

Conclusion

The virtual wall and the lighthouse are two very different navigation devices that have the same goal in mind - to keep your robovac in the area that it’s supposed to clean. While they manage this very differently from each other, each has their own pros and cons. When choosing between the two, make sure to assess what you really need and what you’re planning to block off from your robovac.

iRobot Roomba 880

The IRobot Roomba 880 is one of the top brands in the Roomba 800 series that can clean dry spills as well as other tiny dirt particles and debris with ease. Unlike many robovacs in the market, this vacuum does not sport any brushes enabling it to increase its suction power tremendously – up to 50% more than most Roomba models. Pros

 • 3 stage cleaning system – This unit cleans by utilizing a three stage cleaning protocol that involves first agitating the dirt and debris, brushing them gently and finally sucking them into the dirt chamber.
 • Very easy to use – Simply select the cleaning mode you prefer to use, push the button marked “clean” and the vacuum gets to work.
 • Smart – The Roomba 880 is built with iAdapt response navigation which enables the vacuum to clean clutter around the home without colliding with furniture and objects. It also prevents the machine from falling off raised platforms and stairs.
 • Concentrated cleaning – The Roomba 880 possesses acoustic and optical sensors that can detect concentrations of pet hair, dirt and dust. This enables it to focus its cleaning on specific areas where it is required the most.
 • Virtual walls – Users can restrict the Roomba 880 to clean specific areas by activating the virtual wall light house devices that come with the Roomba.
 • Twice the battery power – The Roomba 880 can deliver up to 2 times the battery power or previous Roomba batteries.

They also have various sensing units under and inside the robotic cleaner providing environmental feedback like locating cliffs and stairs, its trip range and electronic device status. And like a vacuum cleaner, robot cleaners have a motor which produces suction and motors which turn brushes and sweep particles into the suction.

Advantages Of Using Automatic Vacuum Cleaners

Advantages of robot vacuum

Automatic vacuums obviously have their share of advantages which has lead to its increased demand and popularity!

 • Most important, it helps save crucial cleaning time so that you have time for other work. It also relieves you from manually vacuuming floors yourself and zoom past your pets and children while cleaning up the mess they leave behind.
 • Robot floor cleaners are sturdy and last for years. The only maintenance they need is keeping it away from harmful and sharp particles and periodically cleaning its filters and brushes as needed
 • Most units have advanced sensors which can sense the amount of cleaning to be done, so that the machine sticks around to ensure they clean the surface till it s done.
 • Robot cleaners perform only in the space they are programmed for. So if you have kids playing or pets around while it s in use, just set virtual walls in its programming function. This prevents the device from crossing doorways and other openings, and from frightening or hurting your kids and pets.
 • Robotic vacuum cleaners can immediately charge itself if it runs low on battery by returning to its docking station once it has completed a cleaning job.
 • Automatic vacuum cleaners recognize surface modifications and change its settings accordingly. It identifies stairs and walls if it comes across one and immediately turns around.
 • Robocleaners are getting affordable as time passes. This is why the newer models are not only more effective than the original models; they are also cheaper than the first launched models.
 • Cleaning robots are very easy to use. All you need to do is program it for a given space and set its timer for a predetermined start time. Then place it on an appropriate starting spot and it cleans your floor for you.
 • The latest models have been refined and are self-regulating and practically foolproof, thus reducing the chances of mishaps or the device malfunctioning or getting stuck on a surface.
 • Some of the latest robot vacuums multi-task where they not only clean, but also remember your space layout, dump all the collected dirt and can find their way back to charging stations.
 • There are also some robo-vacuum cleaners which can be controlled through Smartphone apps. It is its back-and-forth, methodical and circular motion which ensures each inch of the floor and space is covered for an overall thorough cleaning.
 • Automatic cleaners can work on multiple types of surface ranging from carpets to wood floors to concrete to linoleum. They have advanced sensors for easy transition between bare and carpeted areas without the need of manually switching settings.
 • They can detect and tackle all types of dirt from the barely settled dirt to deeply embedded carpet debris. Its built-in sensors detect the amount of cleaning to be done in various situations and if required, will also repeatedly clean an area till it s clean.
 • As robot vacuums are smaller than upright vacuum cleaners, they can be easily stored anywhere in a closet, under beds or wherever you like. Their size also permits its easy transportation from one location to another and it s easily reaching corners and getting under furniture to reach places regular vacuum cleaners cannot.

Features To Consider While Buying Automatic Vacuums

Looking at all these benefits, and the affordable cost of a robotic vacuum cleaner, it s not surprising that you too may be interested in buying one! Of course, with so many units cleaners to choose from, you may need the help of this buying guide to find out which is the best robot vacuum to invest in.

Amount of maintenance required

Robotic vacuum cleaners clean well but need some regular maintenance. The newer the model, the less maintenance it requires as newer technological improvements help lessen the load while improved features like automatic re-charging have reduced the required amount of physical human contact.

Of course, even the latest models need some attention like emptying the bin when full and replacing battery packs over time. It s better to buy established brands with a strong secondary market for replacement parts where you needn t send the unit back to the manufacturer. All you need to do is buy the replacement part online and follow its instructions for replacing it.

Auto-scheduling

While some units work just by pushing start , the advanced models offer auto-scheduling features. You just have to set the robot s daily, weekly and alternate schedule and it automatically runs. This is a great feature to have if you don t have the time to schedule it every day and are out of the house most of the time.

Battery power and charging requirements

Vacuum robots run on batteries which have to be periodically recharged, which is why the battery power is an important feature to consider. A decent robot vacuum runs for about 60 minutes after which it has to return to base, or you manually have to return it to base, for recharging.

Robot vacuums which run for less than 60 minutes on a full charge are considered to be generally inefficient for use. Those which run for 60 minutes are considered to be lower end, budgetary models, while machines which run for 60-80 minutes are considered mid-range models and those which run 80-90+ minutes are high end and top-of-the-line models.

The recent robots can also automatically return to the charging base for recharging when its battery levels are low. These robots are further classified into:

 • Robots which run till they die and need to be manually carried to their charging base
 • Robots which automatically return to base when the battery is low but restarts the entire cleaning process once charged
 • Robots which automatically return to base when the battery is low, but auto-resume cleaning from the spot where they had left out

Obviously the best, latest and usually most expensive models have a longer battery life, and can also return to the base to recharge.

Cleaning efficiency

The best robotics vacuum cleaner come close and practically match the cleaning efficiency of traditional vacuum cleaners. The low end models are best for light maintenance cleaning and you may periodically have to use a traditional vacuum.

The mid range automatic vacuums do give a good clean, but struggle while cleaning particular surfaces and corners. So its better making your choice based on your objectives. Think about the time you save not vacuuming, and thus be ready to pay a bit more if required!

Size of bin

Do check how large the robot s bin is before buying one lest you end up empting the bin so many times. In case of smaller houses and apartments or houses with minimal dirt and dander, you may not need to empty the bin after every cycle.

However in case of bigger homes, you may have to empty the bin a few times, whenever they fill up. Then again, don t get discouraged with robots where its bin fills up quickly as it may just be that the robot is effectively collecting dirt!

Size of your homely abode

Size always matters, even while choosing robot cleaners. If you have a large home, opt for a newer robot as it has a longer battery life, larger dust bins, automatic recharging feature and better navigation. There are some best robot vacuum cleaners with boundary marking accessories like virtual wall lighthouses and boundary marking tapes which help robots navigate large areas.

Wi-Fi app control

You can finally control your robot from your Smartphone app so that you receive live updates and system monitoring and control available at your fingertips. While this exists in the latest roomba models, you can modify older roomba devices using a simple attachable plate which makes your old robot smart with Wi-Fi connectivity.

Budget

Like any electrical appliance, you need to consider your budget while buying robot cleaners. Most range from between $300 to $900 and while there are robots available for less than $300, they are either cheaper imitations of the real thing or are meant for light cleaning maintenance and not deep cleaning. Your best option is to look for last year s models as though they may not have the latest cutting edge features, they have the latest features.

Identifying dangers

If the auto vacuum cannot identify hazards or gets stuck in unusual places it shouldn t be in, then it s not the right cleaner for you. They should have virtual wall technology and sensors which help them do this and avoid unnecessary accidents and damage. Moreover, choose a model with automatic shutdown to prevent fires due to overheating if it ends up tangled.

HEPA filtration

If you or someone else at home has allergies, pets or asthma, look for home cleaning robots with a HEPA filtration system. This is because these devices not only clean your floors, but also cleans the air. They effectively remove pet dander and hair and catch all the small dust particles which get sucked up in its filter before letting the air out of the exhaust.

Bagless or bagged

Robotic vacuums run on centrifugal force or cyclone technology and have small bins which have to be frequently emptied. There are also bag less models which save the additional cost of buying bags. Look for models which indicate if the robot vacuum is nearing its maximum dirt capacity and the models which automatically empty itself when it returns to its charging station.

Noise

While automatic vacuums are quieter than standard vacs, some emit an annoying high-pitched whistle while others make a mechanical grinding noise. While these sounds may not annoy you if you are out of the house while the vacuum works, if the sound is loud enough, it may annoy neighbours or pets.

Remote control

Some cleaners have remote control for directing it around the room, which some people will consider unfavourable and unnecessary for automatic vacuums. Some people feel that you might as well buy a normal vacuum cleaner instead of spending time directing the vacuum robot with the remote control!

Disadvantages?

Like any electrical appliance, robovacuum cleaners have their share of disadvantages, which are however nothing major to worry about. For example, they are a bit more expensive than regular vacuum cleaners, but not drastically different. In fact, the extra cost is compensated by the additional free time you gain with its robotic features.

There are also some robotic vacuums which may not do that great a cleaning job as a standard vacuum cleaner. There is a chance of it missing a few spots, but is something to expect as it may eventually go over the spot. You can also always manually send it over the spot if you are concerned about it. However on the overall, these automatic cleaners do a great job at cleaning your carpets and floors.

There is also the additional responsibility of regularly charging the robotic vacuum for it to work at cleaning your home. The amount of charging the unit requires depends on your usage, but for most cases, it s enough to just charge it in the evenings when going to bed.

Conclusion

So if you compare the disadvantages with the advantages of a robotic vacuum cleaner, its advantages vastly outnumber the disadvantages. It thus looks like this is an excellent invention worth investing in.

Now if you plan at giving it a try to get some free time to pursue your hobby or concentrate on some other work, then you may find these robot vacuum reviews helpful at making your choice. There are so many robotic cleaners in the market that you may end up confused searching for the best!

Verdict

Roomba 650, 690, and 890 are floor cleaners that offer you amazing features. In terms of price, you would better go for Roomba 650. However, you may not get other advanced features that come with the 690 and 890.

Of the three Roomba products, Roomba 890 stands out as the best though it is the most expensive. Roomba 890 offers you advanced features such as alerting you when the dustbin is full so that you can empty it. It also goes a step further by providing AeroForce filters that trap 99% of the dirt, debris, and allergens down to 10 microns in size. Roomba 890 also uses a brushless extractor, which does a better job than the brush extractor.

Editor Notes:

In our review, Roomba 890 stands out as the best robot despite the high price tag. Unlike the rest, the 890 alerts you when the dustbin is ready to be emptied. It also boasts of the best filtration with the AeroForce filters where it traps even the minute dirt particles to deliver a 99% cleaning outcome.

What’s more? The 890 utilizes the brushless extractor low in noise and more superior to the brushed extractors in the other earlier versions. Additionally, the smart cleaning is made easier with the WIFI compatibility where the robot connects with your smartphone for easy settings for all the functions regardless of your location.

With the Amazon Alexa feature, you’ll still talk to it and issue commands to tackle tasks on your behalf. Better yet, the motor in 890 is stronger than the one in 650 and 690, and this explains why the suction power is remarkable.
